Definition of anti-reverse
The mechanism in a spinning reel which stops the bail and handle from being turned backward. This allows for a strong hookset with little to no backward movement of the bail, which can let off line and pressure which can result in lost fish due to a delay in the hookset. Higher quality reels have what is referred to as an instant anti-reverse where the mechanism allows no backward movement at all. Many spinning reels have a switch to turn this function on and off.
