Definition of close-face
A close-face fishing reel has a hidden spool that is shielded behind bell-shaped housing. This helps keep the mechanisms clear of debris while the spool spins inside to wind the line back on the reel. Close-face reels are very popular with youth and anglers new to the sport as the line is released by use of a button or trigger. These reels can be designed to mount on either casting or spinning rods.
