Definition of free-spool
The ability of a fishing reel to allow a complete drag and resistance-free unspooling of the fishing line. This is useful in ice fishing to drop lures to depth quickly, and similarly with trolling as this allows deployment of baits and lures quickly out to the main line lengths needed for lures to reach desired depths. In float fishing this allows for current to pull line from the reel as the bait or flies flow downstream, covering great amounts of water.
