Definition of open-face
An open-faced fishing reel mounted underneath a fishing rod with an exposed spool. Line is wound onto the reel by the bail wire and rotor which spins on a central shaft connected to the gears. These have many moving parts and may require regular cleaning and re-application of lubricants for proper, long-term function.
