Setting the hook

Definition of setting the hook

The act of pulling or “jerking” a fishing rod when a fish bites the lure or bait at the end of the fishing line attached to the rod, with the intent to drive a hook into the mouth of the fish to be able to land the fish. Commonly done with logs and boulders as well.

• jerk
