Trolling for lake trout on the eastern basin is one of the most exciting experiences that Lake Erie has to offer. The sheer power and beauty of these prehistoric looking creatures is an extraordinary experience that leaves you wanting more. It’s a short season for targeting Lakers, which usually starts in late April through mid to late May. The method for catching lake trout on Lake Erie is trolling. The best tactic I’ve found is running dodgers and flashers with spoons and spin ‘n’ glos because they act as an attractor, drawing fish to your baits. Here are some of the most productive dodgers and flashers I’ve found:
Silver Horde Gold Star Dodgers
Gold Star Dodgers have been around for a long time and their quality is second to none. They have good quality stainless steel swivels and welded rings. They are available in two sizes – six and eight inch. They have some great colors to choose from. FishUSA also has some really nice custom color options to chose from as well.
Luhr Jensen Dodgers
The same company that brought you the Dipsy Diver also makes one of the best dodgers on the market. Luhr Jensen Dodgers offer some great color options with three sizes to choose from – four, six and eight inches. They utilize quality hardware and the finish is fantastic.
Pro-Troll Flashers are a great addition to any tackle box. They produce a spinning/kicking attraction that draws lake trout in to your bait. Pro-Troll offers a variety of great colors, sizes and finishes and also utilizes Pro-Troll’s EChip Technology. They are offered in eight inch and eleven inch models with finned tail or paddle tail.
Dreamweaver Paddle Flashers
Dreamweaver is one of the finest producers of great lakes trolling products on the market and their Paddle Flashers are no exception. They have a great design and fantastic color schemes, including glow-in-the-dark and UV. These flashers are available in eight and eleven inch sizes. The paddle tail design gives a full 360-degree rotation at both slow and fast trolling speeds.
Michigan Stinger Rotating Flashers
Michigan Stinger makes some of the best trolling spoons on the market. They also offer flashers. Michigan Stinger Flashers are designed to rotate and have some of the most intricate and eye popping finishes on their flashers. These flashers are also equipped with an EChip, which duplicates the electrical discharge of a wounded baitfish. These flashers are available in an eight inch length and their colors are all Super UV.
Yakima Big Al’s Fish Flash
Big Al’s Fish Flash is considered a no drag flash because it has almost no resistance in the water. It is considered an inline spinning flasher. I use these primarily with downriggers and they are extremely easy to utilize. These flashers are offered in six and eight inch models with several color options.
